ABOUT ATLANTA UNION MISSION

HOME OF "MY SISTER'S HOUSE"

Why My Sister's House

Thank-You from

My Sister's House 10/1/09

My Sister's House is a program hosted by the Atlanta Union Mission.  It is an emergency shelter and residential recovery program for women and children.

Residential Recovery Program

The residential recovery program is a 6-8 month long program, primarily for women with substance abuse or codependency problems.  The program has a dual focus on spirituality and the 12-step approach to recovery and is also nicotine-free.

Clients participate in group therapy, individual therapy, psycho-educational classes, 12-step meetings, work therapy and recreational therapy throughout each day.  The program offers support for a wide range of issues including eating disorders, domestic violence, sexual or physical abuse and childhood traumas.

History

Established as a Depression era soup kitchen by church and business leaders in 1938, Atlanta Union Mission now serves as the community's leading provider of homeless services.

Atlanta Union Mission began to provide services to women in 1969.  In 2003, the Mission renovated and expanded the campus doubling the capacity to 264 women and children.

The name - My Sister's House - was chosen to reflect the family atmosphere that makes the place welcoming and home-like.

Facilities

The Emergency Shelter:  154 beds are provided for homeless women and children who are in need of emergency shelter.  Referrals for jobs and affordable housing are provided along with 3 meals per day.  Shelter guests have staff available 24 hours a day to assist with spiritual, emotional and practical needs.

Recovery program:  112 spaces are available for women and their children who are enrolled in the recovery program.

Children's Services:  Children's chapel, open plan and an after-school program are provided for the children.  Children are cared for by staff members and divided into age-appropriate classrooms for after-school care and pre-school.
